Surroundings
In Southern
Tuscany along the Maremma coast, in the Province of
Grosseto, as part of the municipality of Scarlino, right on the
border of Follonica and only 100 m from the beach and the
sea away, is situated the campsite Riva dei
Butteri.
From the campsite, equipped with
brand-new bungalows, it is possible to reach within about 15 minutes the town centre of the seaside resort of Follonica, lying on the homonymous Gulf. Follonica offers boutiques, shops, bars, restaurants, night clubs, pitch and putt, playgrounds, water fun-park, racecourse and much more. Only a view steps from the campsite, there is a very active diving centre and about 3 km away, there is one of the most renowned
kite surf schools in Italy: in fact, the Gulf of Follonica offers, because of the morphology of the coast as well as for the
particular sea-weather conditions, perfect opportunities to practice all year round
sailing sports with windsurf and sailing regattas.

Furthermore are not lacking discotheques and
events that, from April until September, characterize the social life of these places with performances, opera, folklore, historic events and much more.
There are also the village festivals with gastronomic and wine specialities that exalt the typical products and dishes of the land of the Tuscany Maremma. The Maremma is also the home of the famous Tuscan cowboys, the so called
butteri.
The ideal geographical position of the campsite Riva dei Butteri, allows making many trips to places of historic as well as of naturalistic or environmental interest, of which Tuscany and, especially this area, are so rich.
Only a few minutes from the campsite Riva dei Butteri away:
The medieval village Scarlino with the Aldobrandeschi fortress dating back to the 13th century;
At
Puntone di Scarlino the modern yacht harbour, which is also the perfect starting point to visit the
faunal oasis of more than 700 ha of coastal scrub-land, where are still living undisturbed
roe deers, wild boars, badgers and
porcupines. The area can only be reached on foot, by bike or on horseback along well-marked trekking routes.
From Puntone it is also possible to reach the three beautiful
natural coves: Cala Violina, renowned for the white quartz grains that, trampling on it, are producing a sound
like a violin string; Cala Martina, whose inlet is characterized by soft and inviting cliffs, from where
Garibaldi in 1849 set sail to escape from the Austrian and grand-ducal troops; finally
Cala Civette, where ends the trekking path.
Also
nearby, the elegant seaside resort Punta Ala with yacht
harbour, the picturesque maritime village Castiglione della
Pescaia and Massa Marittima precious "Pearl of the Middle Ages";
Near Massa Marittima, the Centro Carapax, a unique European centre for the tortoise protection, that preserves many species and
has also housed the stork centre with the largest aviary in Italy.
From Riva dei Butteri towards north it is possible to reach between
30 and 90 minutes by car:
Venturina with its spa centre, provided with a natural hot spring
of 36°C: The "Calidario" and the spa "Terme Valle del Sole"; the Archaeological Park of
Baratti and Populonia with the suggestive gulf and the
Etruscan necropolis that can be entirely visited;
Piombino with two harbours, an antique medieval one and another modern harbour, from where it is possible to reach the islands of Corsica, Sardinia and some of the islands of the
Tuscan Archipelago (the largest protected area of the European seas and the first big maritime park in Italy) such as the
Island of Elba;
Pisa and the Leaning Tower, Florence the cradle of the Renaissance and the Italian culture.
Towards south, between 30 and 90 minutes by car from the campsite
Riva dei Butteri, it is possible to reach: Grosseto the provincial capital and bishop's seat;
Roselle with its archaeological park and the antique Etruscan town of 7 gates that is still preserving an intact quarter and two rare examples of houses, situated right under the Roman forum;
Saturnia and the renowned beneficial sulphurous thermal waters of 37°C temperature;
Siena, noble town of arts.
Orbetello with its lagoon, an WWF oasis; the
Natural Park of the Maremma, also called Parco
dell'Uccellina, extending over more than 9,000 ha of land; the
Monte Argentario, holiday destination of Italian and international VIPs with its Mediterranean aquarium, equipped with 11 basins, of which 6 are panoramic. They were originally born to reproduce the most significant ecosystems of the Argentario coast with more than hundreds of animal and vegetal species;
Porto Santo Stefano (ferry to the Island of Giglio) and
Porto Ercole.
For those who like to pass a holiday of complete
relaxation, sun, beach and "dolce far
niente" they will be satisfied at Riva dei Butteri
and probably even forget that they have a car!
Considering in fact the closeness to the sea and to the Follonica town centre, together with all the comforts with which the campsite Riva dei Butteri is equipped, once left your car within the parking, it will seem superfluous for you to use it.
